DIESTRO & SINIESTRO
Series of 12 drawings
Ink and/or marker on paper; (2009)
I’m not left-handed, but towards the middle of 2009 I started drawing with my left hand. I only wanted to try something new, but inadvertently I discovered an effective and amusing way of weakening my right hand’s tyranny, with its perfectionist obsessions and hard, precise lines. With my left hand I relaxed a great deal, and in little time realized that this affected the way I drew with my right. My left hand also allowed me to tackle color again, something I had not been able to do for years. Experimenting like so, from hand to hand, I produced this series of drawings. Some were made only with my left, others only with my right, and in a few I combined the two. While I drew, I thought a lot about how this left-right dichotomy has permeated western civilzation from its very origins, defining the way in which we conceive space, language, politics and morality.
