Art and Curation: Something Like a Fotonovela was made in collaboration with Walo Araújo (curator) and Dominique Ratton (photographer), and was presented in March, 2005 in the Costa Rican Musuem of Contemporary Art and Design. The piece formed part of a collective exhibition entitled Art and Curation: Is Dialogue Possible?, in which 8 artist/curator pairs from the Central American region were asked to participate with projects. For this piece, the three of us took on the work involved in defining and executing an artistic project equally. Given the complexity of the “artist/curator” theme, and it’s potential for convoluted rhetoric, we chose to use a humorous tone within the framework of a popular medium: the fotonovela. The dialogue spontaneously spread to include other artists within our community, who agreed to participate in the project and pose for our camera. We incorporated documentation and other imagery from their work, appropriating it as we saw fit. More than 20 people (artists, curators and friends) e-mailed us their opinions about curatorial work, and some of it was included in the fotonovela’s storyline. The excersize we carried out made us think about the possibilities of establishing a true dialogue between those who make art and the public that consumes it.
